I think the flight attendant acted appropriately. If they had made an exception because the bag was expensive, the situation could have become more complicated. Other passengers might then have refused to follow the rules too, claiming their bags are were valuable too. In an emergency, this could lead to serious problems. People’s safety are is more important than an expensive bag.
